MAALSTRÖM STUDIO / ABOUT

A Prague-based studio shaping discarded wood into objects with a strong material presence — quiet, tactile and made to last.

Made by hand.
Kept in motion.

I also enjoy combining traditional woodturning techniques with more modern approaches, like using spray paint and stencils on my wooden objects. I love how this fusion brings out a unique contrast, blending the timeless beauty of handcrafted wood with contemporary artistic expression. It’s a way for me to honor the old skill while adding my personal touch, creating pieces that feel both classic and fresh.

Wood remembers the hand that gives it form.

Wood remembers the hand that gives it form.

In 2018, a first lathe turned a simple hobby into a lasting practice. We work with green and discarded wood, following its grain, cracks and natural shifts instead of hiding them. Every object is a collaboration between material, time and the hand that shapes it.

One of the things I truly enjoy about woodturning is working with green wood. As it dries, the wood naturally shrinks and warps, and I find the entire process fascinating. These changes bring out unique shapes and characteristics in each piece, making them one-of-a-kind. Watching the wood transform as it dries, and seeing how it takes on its own personality, adds an extra layer of beauty and unpredictability to my work. It’s this natural evolution that makes each creation feel special and personal.
